The goat head control guide

More success. Less guesswork.

In short: goat heads are beaten by strategy, not by a single weekend of effort. Pull young plants early, never mow them, collect dropped burs from the ground before they spread, and put everything in the trash, never the compost. Repeat each season and the pressure on your yard drops year after year.

The strategy in four moves

Move 1

Early detection

Watch for low-growing mats, small yellow flowers, and new plants in bare soil, gravel, paths and fence lines. Young sprouts are easier to remove.

Move 2

Remove young plants

Pull or hoe plants before they produce burs. Remove the crown and as much root as possible. Wear gloves.

Move 3

Collect dropped burs

Once burs are on the ground, use THORNADO to roll and collect the sharp seed pods from soil surfaces and high-traffic areas.

Move 4

Repeat and dispose

Bag plants and collected burs and throw them away. Do not compost seed-bearing material. Monitor regularly.

Mistakes that reseed your yard

Mowing the plants

Mowing spreads seeds and burs across the very ground you are trying to clean. Pull plants instead, and collect what has already dropped.

Composting the debris

Goat head seeds can remain viable in soil for years. Everything you pull or collect goes in a bag, then in the trash.

Skipping a season

One missed season can reseed the area. The win condition is simple: help prevent new seeds from entering the soil seed bank, season after season.

Only treating the lawn

Goat heads love bare soil, gravel, driveways, paths and fence lines. Walk your whole property, not just the green parts.

Where THORNADO fits

Hand-pulling handles the living plants. THORNADO handles what they leave behind: the mature burs waiting on the ground for a paw, a tire or a bare foot. Roll over affected ground, peel the mesh sleeve off inside out with the burs trapped inside, and toss it. Chemical-free mechanical burr collection, designed so you collect thorns without picking them up by hand.
